Field Attributes. 55-66 cm. Size very variable, male considerably larger than females. Can be confused with Gull, but is much larger, with heavier bill (with red spot on gonys) and flesh-colored legs. A portion of the population has Baltic yellowish to yellow legs; is distinguishable from Yellow-legged Gull by lighter gray jacket and more white drawing in the wing tip. Black wing tips and distinguish this species of Gull Gull and Glaucous Gull. Mantle and upper wing pale blue-gray; wingtips metwitte black spots; other white plumage. Winter plumage similar, but with greyish stripes on the head, neck and upper chest. Juvenile difficult to distinguish juvenile Lesser Black-backed Gull; seems smoother flight, with no clear contrast between subterminal tail band and surrounding parts, and with inner contrast between light brown and dark outer primaries (even dark at Lesser Black-backed Gull). Terms gull aggressive than other gulls.
