  1. Somewhat morbid but a great behavioral shot! Posted 10 years ago
  2. Phymata crassipes doesn't look like a good match. Posted 10 years ago
  3. To all of you, since I originally broadcast these two images, I never claimed that those were shots of Phymata crassipes. That insect only lives in Europe, Asia and Africa.
From the beginning I identified the insect on ITIS and followed with the proper name of the species as Phymata Americana. That species only lives in North America.

    1. I can see the name in the title, but the problem is that you have identified it as Phymata crassipes in the species identification module. As this is the only one available in Wikipedia, an ID should be created in the JungleDragon database for any other species. You can request it from the advanced options in the identification window.

My only concern is that Phymata pennsylvanica looks similar and the range of both species overlaps in Quebec. The difference between the two species is described in the link below. It looks more like Phymata pennsylvanica to me.

      1. I took the time to analyze all the information and I came to the conclusion that the error was mine. You are correct in your statement that both species are present in the location where the pictures were taken, however I come to the decision that this photo is a Phymata americana. 1. Why would you come to that decision?
I think this one has the prominent notch of Phymata pennsylvanica at the brown stripe rather than the smooth edge of Phymata americana.
