Sage Dusted Face This calf bison was adorable as can be! He was super curious as to why we were stopped to take pictures of him and his relatives. He was also quite talkative while I was trying to photograph his sage dusted face. I love the calves' personalities! Picture taken west of Lamar Valley, YNP. 1. Great portrait! I once saw a wildlife TV show host do an interesting experiment with these bison. First, standing next to them, nothing happens. Then, the same reporter making himself small, crawling on his hand and feet...and BOOM...the entire herd in a panic and fleeing. Apparently they are hardwired to be very afraid of any mammal-like creature of a specific height. Posted 10 years ago
    1. Oh for sure and thank you! I know that Molly's pack in Yellowstone primarily preyed upon Bison, so it wouldn't surprise me that they know that four legged animals are more dangerous than two! That's super interesting though, I'd love to see this experiment! Posted 10 years ago, modified 10 years ago
      1. Maybe we can conduct our own experiment on this topic this summer... Posted 10 years ago

          1. Ha! I definitely want to start doing some filming. We'll have to see what we can come up with :) Posted 10 years ago

          3. An experiment would be fun, but I call videographer! I don't want to be on the ground when those bison decide they would like to stomp all over me... Posted 10 years ago

The American bison is a North American species of bison that once roamed the grasslands of North America in massive herds. Their range once roughly comprised a triangle between the Great Bear Lake in Canada's far northwest, south to the Mexican states of Durango and Nuevo León, and east along the western boundary of the Appalachian Mountains.
