Red-winged Blackbird - Early Spring
This male red-winged blackbird has a very distinct sound and takes me back to my childhood growing up in the mid-west United States where they were very abundant and could be heard all spring and throughout the summer. They are a sure sign that spring is coming, as they are some of the first birds to migrate back north. Looks like spring will be early this year! Captured on McArthur Lake, north Idaho.

The red-winged blackbird is a passerine bird of the family Icteridae found in most of North and much of Central America. It breeds from Alaska and Newfoundland south to Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, Mexico, and Guatemala, with isolated populations in western El Salvador, northwestern Honduras, and northwestern Costa Rica.
