Isla Isabela's Brown Boobies
Brown boobies are strong seabirds who reside near warm, tropical waters. Their diet consists of fish that they catch or snatch from other birds. They hunt their prey by diving into ocean waters, a beautiful display of their fortitude and grace. The birds may mate for life and males and females care jointly for their young, who require nurturing for 20 or more weeks. This photo was taken atop a nesting bluff at Isla Isabela, a remote island off the coast of Pacific Mexico.
The brown booby is a large seabird of the booby family, "Sulidae". They present sexual dimorphism. The female booby reaches about 80 centimetres in length, its wingspan measures up to 150 cm, and they can weigh up to 1,300 g. The male booby reaches about 75 centimetres in length, its wingspan measures up to 140 cm, and they can weigh up to 1,000 g.
