The smooth-coated otter Another new species for here but the otter I have seen most in my life! :)

I was sat on the bank of the backwater, just waiting for anything to appear... I saw the otters across the way on a floating patch of vegetation. Now when i use my big lens, i get a lot of attention... so much so, that people on the tour boats going past where just looking at me (the white guy with the big a** lens), and not behind themselves at the otter. :)

This is what their habitat is like... they were not secluded nicely away from humans, they lived in and amongst the water traffic. 2014,Cochin,India,John Rowell,Kerala,Kochi,Lutrogale perspicillata,Smooth-coated otter, adhocphotographer Click/tap to enlarge Species introCountry intro

  1. Cool species intro. We normally try to avoid humans on photos here but I'm sure you had no other way. Posted 8 years ago
    1. Well.. actually, i have many other shots lacking humans, but for me this summed it up... the story goes like this:

I was sat on the bank of the backwater, just waiting for anything to appear... I saw the otters across the way on a floating patch of vegetation. Now when i use my big lens, i get a lot of attention... so much so, that people on the tour boats going past where just looking at me (the white guy with the big a** lens), and not behind themselves at the otter. :)

Also, this is what their habitat is like... they were not secluded nicely away from humans, they lived in and amongst the water traffic. I will up-load a clean pic i have taken elsewhere (both in Karnataka and Assam).

Also, wildlife photography for me is not only a great image of the species, but also how the species lives. I tend not to crop-out or photoshop out human elements in images, but try to capture the real environment. It my be sad, but it sometimes it is necessary to show the sad reality!

I'm glad you like it anyway! :)

      1. Thanks for sharing the full story. We do have the rule of avoiding humans (and buildings) on photos, but we apply the rules given the context. People over process. This one clearly is captured this way with a reason and with good intentions, so it's not an issue.

I do want to avoid humans on photos as much as possible, even if humans live together in the species' habitat, which is almost always true.

        1. No worries... And noted for the future... :)

Although if I get my dream shot of a wild leopard on a roof of a house +/- eating a domestic dog, I will be sharing the hell out of it! :)

The smooth-coated otter is an otter species occurring in most of the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, with a disjunct population in Iraq. As its name indicates, the fur of this species is smoother and shorter than that of other otter species.
