Golden backed ant (red head morph), Sri Lanka After a full hour of searching, I was about to give up on identifying this ant species. I figured it to be a carpenter ant. The closest match I could find was the Golden Backed Ant, shown here:<br />

However, I could find none of that species with a red head. And then I came across this article which describes a red head morph of the species:<br />
