Snake-head Bloom - Deadly beauty
This cluster of flowers from the Snake-head flower (Drimia altissima) normally occurs during the start of the Namibian summer. It will be the first green shoots appearing after a dry and brown winter. Domestic animals (such as cattle) will easily and readily eat this plant, and then, after drinking water, die. This plant contains strychnine poison.
Drimia altissima is a tall perennial bulbous plant found in tropical Africa.
The bulb is sometimes gathered from the wild for local medicinal use.
