Gemmed Satyr on a Maple Leaf A gemmed satyr perched on a maple leaf. They tend to choose places to perch that they will blend in with. The maple leaf fits that description, but is much prettier than some of the other places I&#039;ve tried to photograph them.<br />

  1. Well spotted! I wonder what color the inside of their wings has? Posted 10 years ago
  2. They're actually usually pretty obvious, because they flutter around like crazy. And now looking at it more closely, I realized I misidentified it! This is a new species for me personally. In the field I thought I saw it had a bird tear that removed some of the eye spots, but that is actually one of its different markings from the carolina satyr. The Gemmed Satyr is a species of butterfly of the Nymphalidae family. It is found in the South-Eastern United States and North-Eastern Mexico.

The wingspan is 35–43 mm. Adults are on wing from April to September in the Northern parts of its range and year round in the South.

The larvae probably feed on ''Cynodon dactylon''.
