  1. Very cool - I have a pretty big collection of fungi photos, but I've yet to come across one like this. I've been hoping to find a lion's mane or similar one. I'm curious - was this a recent photo (you've got no EXIF coming through) - we've been having an unusually warm and low snow winter so far here in Washington and I was wondering if it's the same for you all a little further north. 1. I had the same thought, I've been hoping to encounter this species for a while!

Great photo and species intro @Tracy.

      1. Thank you! Yes, I was pleasantly surprised finding this! :-) Posted 10 years ago
    2. Isn't it neat?! I completely lucked out finding it as it was off the beaten path and I found it so interesting. I wanted to touch it but I didn't dare as it looked so fragile. Darn, the exif is not there, I'm assuming because I just snagged this photo from my facebook page where I originally posted it. I will have to pull out my external hard drive to find the original. I do remember it was later in the summer, possibly early fall when I found it. For all the bush/forest I have adventured through I have never seen anything like it but I am really hoping it wont be the last I see. Very whimsical, I just love it. Posted 10 years ago
  2. Wonderful fungus, reminds me of a frozen waterfall. Posted 10 years ago
    1. Indeed, Claire! Agreed! :-) Posted 10 years ago
  3. I think this may be Hericium abietis rather than Hericium erinaceus - abietis branches and erinaceus does not

    1. I am in agreement that this is not H. erinaceus. Posted 7 years ago

''Hericium abietis'', commonly known as the bear's head or the western coral hedgehog, is an edible mushroom in the tooth fungus group. It grows on conifer stumps or logs in North America, producing a cream white fruit body up to 10–75 cm tall and wide. It fruits from after the start of the fall rains to mid-season.
