Sun bird it is, but exact sub-species unknown..
Usually on Sundays I head to the outskirts of Bangalore for Photography and one fine Sunday I found this sun bird drinking nectar off the flowers just beside the Jigani-Harohalli, Ragihalli Highway and I was lucky to photograph it.

The purple sunbird is a small sunbird. Like other sunbirds they feed mainly on nectar, although they will also take insects, especially when feeding young. They have a fast and direct flight and can take nectar by hovering like a hummingbird but often perch at the base of flowers. The males appear all black except in some lighting when the purple iridescence becomes visible. Females are olive above and yellowish below.

I've taken a few clues there. Whilst there's over a 100 species worldwide, India knows 12, which narrows down our search. Out of those 12, the 2 most commonly seen and most widely distributed are the Purple sunbird and the purple-rumped Sunbird, atlhough that does not mean that this is one. Given the dull plumage, this is likely a female, making identification quite difficult. Posted 10 years ago
