Strolling alligator snapping turtle I encountered this rather large turtle as I was training on my bicycle. I stopped to shoot with my point-and-shoot camera and got some good facial close-ups. Only later was I told that this was a snapping turtle and they are so powerful that they can snap a broom stick handle with one bite! 1. He was a beast, he was just strolling down the sidewalk like he owned the place so I stopped to introduce myself. You can see that alligator like tail which is probably part of the reason he was named "alligator" snapping turtle. I was amazed at how high they walk off the ground in that I often encounter turtles in the roadway and stop and place them safely on the other side. They are always crawling along barely off the ground, but this guy had plenty of ground clearance! Posted 10 years ago

The common snapping turtle is a large freshwater turtle of the family Chelydridae. Its natural range extends from southeastern Canada, southwest to the edge of the Rocky Mountains, as far east as Nova Scotia and Florida and as far southwest as northeastern Mexico. This species and the larger alligator snapping turtle are the only two species in this family found in North America.
