Camponotus planatus (carpenter ant) I found this moving target on my back stairs and somehow was able to get a shot in reasonable focus as it scurried about. I didn't find the ID using the iD button which only showed a black carpenter ant. Camponotus planatus, ant, destructive insects, insects Click/tap to enlarge Species intro

  1. Species created manually! Posted 10 years ago
    1. Yes, and they have been known to do a bit manual work themselves. Ferdy, I noticed that I simply replied to this initially by saying "LOL." On numerous tries, it would not save the comment which leads me to believe that comments have a requirement of some minimum amount of characters. Posted 10 years ago

Camponotus planatus is a relatively small (3-6 mm) polymorphic species. It is a dull reddish brown with a contrasting black gaster and is covered with short, stiff, whitish yellow hairs on the dorsal surfaces of the head, mesosoma and gaster. The species is native to the Neotropics, and has established introduced populations in the Southeastern United States. It is uncertain whether the population in Cuba (the type locality) is native or introduced. Although not considered a significant pest species.. more
