  1. According to 2 lists of bird species in Botswana, Vidua orientalis is not present, but the similar Vidua paradisaea is.
There is a bird site according to which Vidua orientalis is not a valid species and it is now part of Vidua paradisaea, while others say it is, but it is found in the northern parts of the continent and Botswana is not within it's range anyway...

    1. Thanks for the info. Did I identify the bird incorrectly? In the book I have on birds of Southern Africa, it's common name is stated as "Long-tailed paradise-whydah". It's kind of a symbol bird for the region and it's even on Botswana Tourism website: http://www.botswanatourism.co.bw/animal/long-tailed-paradise-whydah

      1. Yes, you had identified it as Sahel paradise whydah - Vidua orientalis, that's why I wrote the comment and changed it. That's why it is better to use the scientific names, I wonder why it is not mentioned in your reference. Posted 10 years ago, modified 10 years ago

The long-tailed paradise whydah or eastern paradise whydah is a small brown sparrow-like bird of Eastern Africa, from eastern South Sudan to southern Angola.
