Sri Lankan Leopard on the go in Wilpaththu, Sri Lanka A good 200m away we had been staring at the bush on the left because a leopard was resting in the shade there. Then it got up and made a slow strawl into the bushes in the background. A leopard spotting is a big deal in Sri Lanka, it attracts every jeep in the park. The Sri Lankan Leopard is a leopard subspecies native to Sri Lanka. Classified as "Endangered" by IUCN, the population is believed to be declining due to numerous threats including poaching for trade and human-leopard conflicts. This subspecies is colloquially known as Kotiya in Sinhala and Siruththai in Tamil.
