Uinta Ground Squirrel

A lot of people mistake these squirrels for prairie dogs, but none the less, they are simply squirrels that live in the ground. They also look like the Columbian ground squirrel but do not have as much red in their pelage. Picture taken at Slough Creek, YNP.

It is very pretty, however I think is not a Uinta chipmunk. Uinta have a pattern of red back with black and white stripes (see my spotting: http://www.jungledragon.com/image/33768/uinta_chipmunk.html)
...are you sure this is a chipmunk at all? it actually looks to me more like a marmot (?) Posted 9 years ago

Hi Sara: Now I see that you have ID correctly as Uinta ground squirrel but that the program has somehow confused it with Uinta Chipmunk in the species part. She was right - it is definitely a Uinta Ground Squirrel - I have a photo of one as well that I will add and you can see that they are the same species. Posted 8 years ago
