  1. Oh my, what long leg you have :) Another stunning bird shot, Ferdy! You are once again inspiring me to go birding. I thought about going into the mountains again this afternoon, but it is too foggy up there today. I wouldn't be able to see much, and more importantly, where I would be going... Posted 8 years ago

The black-winged stilt is a widely distributed very long-legged wader in the avocet and stilt family. The scientific name "H. himantopus" was formerly applied to a single, almost cosmopolitan species. It is now normally applied to the form that is widespread in Eurosiberia and Africa and which was formerly regarded as the nominate subspecies of "Himantopus himantopus" "sensu lato".
