Sri Lankan elephants in Wilpaththu Our first encounter with elephants in Sri Lanka. Although far away, we enjoyed the view in their natural habitat, behaving in peace. Note that they are walking in shallow water here. It&#039;s an ideal place as they can bath whilst eating the grass. Interesting fact: Sri Lankan elephants rarely ever have tusks. In this world I guess that is a good thing.<br />

The Sri Lankan elephant is one of three recognized subspecies of the Asian elephant, and native to Sri Lanka. Since 1986, "Elephas maximus" has been listed as endangered by IUCN as the population has declined by at least 50% over the last three generations, estimated to be 60–75 years. The species is pre-eminently threatened by habitat loss, degradation and fragmentation.
