Mule Deer Buck - Afternoon Snack A mule deer buck browses through the willows for a snack. The willows are a winter favorite for the mule deer, as they are abundant and thrive in recently burned areas. This mountainside burned a decade ago and serves as great winter habitat for mule deer.<br />

The atmosphere for this set of photos was amazing. The fog was rolling in and out, nearly concealing the deer completely at times. It was so calm and quiet that I could hear the deer crunching the willow twigs as they chewed them. Captured in north Idaho. The mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) is a deer indigenous to western North America; it is named for its ears, which are large like those of the mule. Two subspecies of mule deer are grouped into the black-tailed deer.
