Family of White-tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) The deer in this park were having a fairly lazy day near the paths, so I was able to learn that there were more in the area than I first thought. We saw 12 deer (8 of which are pictured here), and we know there are at least two bucks in the area that we didn't see this day, so there are at least 14 (I previously thought there were only 6-8). 1. What a wonderful sight. They look so calm and the autumn scenery is beautiful. I was wondering, what are their natural enemies in this area? Posted 10 years ago
    1. NY north of the finger lakes, and west of Syracuse is basically void of large predators from what I know. There are coyotes in the state, but I think they are all farther south and east. Even in the Catskills and Adirondacks, I think cars and hunters are by far the biggest threat to deer.
There are a lot of hawks and eagles that might be a threat to very young deer, but I'm pretty sure they'd never go after an adult.

      1. Thanks for the info, perhaps that explains their calmness. Posted 10 years ago
  2. If they are a local population of deer that inhabits the park regularly, my guess is that they are habituated to seeing people and they aren`t too bothered as long as you don`t approach them. Posted 10 years ago
  3. lol… indeed the large American SUV is probably their worst predator… I went to college in nearby Rochester. Deer were a serious nuisance there. They were overpopulated and everywhere. They ate people's landscaping (they have a fondness for roses), killed motorists (someone died on a road just off campus while we were there when a deer came through his windscreen), mobbed the golf course and would get themselves trapped in places like the tennis courts and student union building… yes indeed a deer found the automatic doors and got himself stuck. If I remember right, there were so many that the city was contemplating paying bow hunters to thin them out within the city limits….. Posted 10 years ago

The white-tailed deer, also known commonly as the whitetail and the Virginia deer, is a medium-sized species of deer native to North America, Central America, and South America as far south as Peru and Bolivia, where it predominately inhabits high mountain terrains of the Andes.
