Something Moosey... I spotted this cow moose this afternoon as I was exploring a new river drainage. She was a little reluctant to put up with my intrusive behavior at first. When I first spotted her, she was rather close (10 meters or so). Too close for both of us. Take one was a failed attempt.
After waiting a few minutes to let her settle down, I approached through the woods at a different angle. This time she spotted me first, and I saw her at about 20-25 meters. She had keyed in on me once again, but this time did not run. After watching her and moving slowly for several minutes, she decided I wasn't a threat and relaxed. She didn't move from this spot, but she did look around and only watched me part of the time.
A beautiful beast and a unique encounter that left me in total awe. Captured along the Pack River in north Idaho. Alces alces,Geotagged,Idaho,Mammals,Moose,United States, fall, snow Click/tap to enlarge Promoted

1. I was about to say that, you couldn't have captured it better! By the way, is it snowing on the photo? Posted 10 years ago
1. Yes, it is snowing in the photo! That was another aspect I was trying to capture. Posted 10 years ago, modified 10 years ago
2. You have just put Moose on my "bucket list". Thanks for the the great picture and narrative. Posted 10 years ago
1. They are goofy creatures, but I love observing them. They can be timid, but often put up a very dominant and sometimes aggressive front. They aren't really afraid of much. They don't need to be when they're as big as they are. This cow stood 6 feet at the shoulder. She was very big. Posted 10 years ago
3. Oh my word, that is just awesome! You are so lucky to see these magnificent animals and yup, you captured it just right. Posted 10 years ago
1. Glad you like it! I really am getting into the big characteristic mega fauna. I just enjoy watching them so much! Posted 10 years ago

The moose or elk is a member of the New World deer subfamily and is the largest and heaviest extant species in the deer family. Most adult male moose have distinctive broad, palmate antlers; most other members of the deer family have antlers with a dendritic configuration.
