Purple Fairy Club This may just be the strangest "mushroom" I've come across yet. At first I thought it was a wild onion or the shoots of some sort of bulb, with its hollow stem like structure, but indeed it is a fungus. While not incredibly rare, I only came across it once and only one clump. It was quite close to the ocean, maybe a 1/4 mile or so to the beach. ''Alloclavaria purpurea'' is a coral fungus commonly known as the purple coral, or the purple fairy club. Formerly known as ''Clavaria purpurea'', it has been moved to its own genus as a result of phylogenetic analysis.
