Cackling Goose
Imagine my surprise when I did a little research (prompted by a sign at the park) and found out that these were not Canada Geese. Apparently these smaller look alikes have recently been found to be a separate species. They are recognized by their smaller size, smaller beak and shorter neck.

The cackling goose is a North American bird of the genus ''Branta'' of black geese, which contains species with largely black plumage, distinguishing them from the grey ''Anser'' species.
