Polar Bear
Mercedes the Polar Bear.
Mercedes was captured after being rescued from being shot in Canada in 1984 and added to the animal collection at Edinburgh Zoo. She was relocated to a specially built enclosure at Kincraig in 2009.
During her 25 years in Edinburgh, Mercedes reared two cubs, both sired by her partner Barney, who was born at Whipsnade Zoo.
Unfortunately Mercedes died at the age of 30 in April 2011 due to arthritis.

The polar bear is a bear native largely within the Arctic Circle encompassing the Arctic Ocean, its surrounding seas and surrounding land masses. It is the world's largest land carnivore and also the largest bear, together with the omnivorous Kodiak Bear, which is approximately the same size. An adult male weighs around 350–680 kg, while an adult female is about half that size.
