  4. Really interesting for the discussion of whether zebras are white with black stripes or black with white stripes. The extensive black on the back would suggest the latter, as you would expect mutations to remove the stripes, not the base color, but the face and legs seem to suggest the opposite - fascinating. Louis Leakey noted that Europeans in Africa described zebras as white with black stripes whereas the indigenous inhabitants described them as black with white stripes - cultural projection anyone? The plains zebra, also known as the common zebra, is the most common and geographically widespread species of zebra. Its range is fragmented, but spans much of southern and eastern Africa south of the Sahara. Six subspecies have been recognised including the extinct quagga which was thought to be a separate species.
