  1. Self promoted because this is one of the prettiest spiders I have ever seen! Posted 10 years ago
    1. Thanks Wildflower, I have noticed discrepancies myself and a similar spider has been identified as Oxyopes flavipalpis but I have now sent the photo off to the Spider Club of SA in the hope they can confirm for me. Posted 10 years ago
      1. I also found the photos of Oxyopes flavipalpis on ispot, but did not mention it because according to the spider catalogue South Africa is not within it's distribution range so I am not sure if it is the same species and how reliable those IDs are.

        1. My apologies, I updated the description but should have added a comment. At this time a species cannot be absolutely determined due to its colour. I also noted that O. flavipalpis is not shown as in this area but that often happens. Posted 10 years ago
  2. On this site I have repeatedly used the words "I've never seen anything like that before", but never before could I mean it more than today. What an absolute piece of art, Claire! Posted 10 years ago
    1. Oh me too Ferdy, I was just beside myself when I found this. I'd say that I need to get out more, but thats the reason I find these little critters. My garden seems to be full of the weird and wonderful at the moment. Posted 10 years ago
      1. In that case you are excused to temporarily leave the site, capture the critters, and return ;) Posted 10 years ago
        1. Ha ha! Thank you! Posted 10 years ago
  3. Oh, and don't forget to maintain your weird species list ;) Posted 10 years ago
    1. Already on, but wondering whether to start a new one...Sassy Spiders! Posted 10 years ago

Grass lynx spiders (Oxyopes) are very common in the grass and herb layer. They have a worldwide distribution and there are 27 species of Oxyopes known in South Africa.
Lynx spider (Oxis the common name for any member of the family Oxyopidae. Most species make little use of webs, instead spending their lives as hunting spiders on plants. Many species frequent flowers in particular, ambushing pollinators, much as crab spiders do. They tend to tolerate members of their own species more than most.. more
