    1. These were crazy looking - so dark purple as to almost look black - and all over (I have another shot of the stem and gills of one that was knocked over). I've not been able to find anything quite like them yet. Posted 10 years ago

        1. This one, I think, isn't an Amythyst deceiver - it's way bigger than they are supposed to get and different looking in a number of ways. There's not much in there for scale, but the big one was the size of a small pie! On the other hand the small purple mushrooms in one of the other photos, I think are! Posted 10 years ago

''Cortinarius violaceus'' is a mushroom in the genus ''Cortinarius''. It is the type species of the genus, but is distinguished from other species due to its dark colouration and distinct cystidia. Though edible, its primary appeal is its appearance, as it is the darkest mushroom in the genus, comparable only with members of other genera.
