Mallards have a loose and easy genome… they can hybridize with more species than other ducks and the hybrids aren't necessarily always infertile, so there can be second, third, etc. generation hybrids. It can make duck identification somewhat challenging. I've also just discovered that all domestic ducks, with the exception of Muscovy ducks, are simply different breeds of mallard. They may look and act somewhat differently, but are still genetically Anas platyrhynchos that have been selectively bred. Posted 10 years ago, modified 10 years ago

The mallard or wild duck is a dabbling duck that breeds throughout the temperate and subtropical Americas, Eurasia, and North Africa, and has been introduced to New Zealand, Australia, Peru, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, the Falkland Islands, and South Africa.
