  1. This little bug is considered a pest however, I was upset to find it squash in the middle the road today.
    I re-directed it toward the woods yesterday but I guess I should be doing a better job next time. Sigh!

Meloe americanus is an Oil Beetle in the Meloe genus. They are known as "oil beetles" because they release oily droplets of hemolymph from their joints when disturbed; this contains cantharidin, a poisonous chemical causing blistering of the skin and painful swelling. Members of this genus are typically flightless, without functional wings, and shortened elytra.
