Wooly Bear Caterpillar Ah so common, but too cute to leave out :p

We have folk lore here that says you can tell how harsh the winter will be by looking at the wooly bear's stripes. The more brown the milder the winter. There's of course no truth to it at all, but it's still fun. Banded woolly bear,Geotagged,Pyrrharctia isabella,United States Click/tap to enlarge Promoted

  1. Perhaps common to you, but not to me, so please do keep sharing what you consider common :)

It must have been hard focusing on its face but you managed very well.

    1. lol - the dog walkers and joggers probably thought I was nuts standing there holding a stick in one hand and my camera in the other frantically moving and turning the stick to keep the caterpillar (which they probably couldn't see) on the top :p. It took a good number of frames to get one with the face in good focus. Posted 10 years ago
      1. I am used to being considered a freak. You will not believe how many dog walkers and hikers I have scared when they discover me in a forest laying flat to photograph a fungi or some creature. Posted 10 years ago

The moth "Pyrrharctia isabella" is known by different common names during its two main life stages. The adult is the Isabella Tiger Moth and the larva is called the Banded Woolly Bear. The larvae of many species of Arctiid moths are called "woolly bears" because of their long, thick, furlike setae.
