Through my own research I discovered that this insect arrived in Michigan during the 1990's.

  1. It would appear that something has taken a big bite out of him… his (her?) back half is missing. Posted 10 years ago
  2. Cool discovery, thanks for sharing. Indeed it doesn't look fully complete, was it still alive? Posted 10 years ago
  3. Yes, it wasn't until I reviewed the photos later that I too realized the lower part was missing. But it was very alive. First I shot it while it was on the underside of the patio umbrella. Those photos were not as detailed due to the lighting. Then several minutes later it was on the ground, still walking. My adult daughter who went to school for photography was grossed out by the misfortune of the insect. I still think it is a beautiful bug. Posted 10 years ago

The western conifer seed bug, "Leptoglossus occidentalis", sometimes abbreviated as WCSB, is a species of true bug in the family Coreidae. It was originally native to the warm-temperate western USA but has in recent times expanded its range and become an invasive species in parts of Europe.
