Northern Paper Wasp (male) Paper wasps are well worth having in the garden. They prey heavily on other insects, especially caterpillars.

The wasp kills its prey on the spot, stripping off any irritating hairs or spines that could not be easily consumed by the larvae back in the nest. Once back at the nest, the wasp either feeds the larvae directly, or shares parts of the “meatball” with fellow workers that in turn distribute the food to the larvae.

Front view...They are not aggresive toward humans but when they feel threatened, they lift their wings, in a threatining manor, like this one has done. So now is the time for me to back off because the next thing will be a sting (no thanks).
1. It doesn't look like a Cicada Killer. The abdomen is shorter and I don't see the white stripes. It is more likely a Northern Paper Wasp - Polistes fuscatus.

    1. You beat me to it. I was not happy with my identification although it had all the non aggresive attributes of the cicada killer. the abdomen worried me and the yellow markins were not typical. I had found the peper wasp and when I returned to the page to update I was happy to see that you agreed with me. Thank you. I was actually going to contact you to check it out for me. Thanks again Posted 10 years ago
      1. one thing that still bothers me is that my spider has a yellow face. This is not a good picture but see what you think. Also those curly feelers hmmm.
