The high production of sugars, mostly Fructose, in the core of the plant is the main characteristic that makes it suitable for the preparation of alcoholic beverages.
These plants also grow in several parts of India and are called as "Gandu Bootalay" (pronounced: gun-do boo-taa-Lay) in Kannada language (native to Karnataka, South India). They are mostly considered as weeds, and due to their thorny physical nature, they are used as natural fencing in rural areas to protect crops from large animals, and in many other places as such.
