Steller's Sea Lions
Sea Lions in California can be identified from seals by the fact that you can see their ears. These (Stellers) sea lions are a lot paler than the species called "California Sea Lion". (Not to be confused with the Harbor Seals which ARE lighter but have NO visible ears) See the comparisons below:

The Steller sea lion is a near threatened species of sea lion in the northern Pacific. It is the sole member of the genus "Eumetopias" and the largest of the eared seals. Among pinnipeds, it is inferior in size only to the walrus and the two elephant seals.
