Alexandrine parakeet (male) I was surprised there was not one of these here already. Took this the other day while I was playing around with a 'nifty 50' in a very dark area of Birds of Eden. Quite pleased!
Alexandrines are very similar to Ringneck (or Rose-ringed) parakeets and similarly have taken up residence in many European countries. Their native range is in Asia (India,Thailand,Afghanistan,Laos etc.) where it is the largest of all the native parakeets.
The female of the species lacks the ring around its neck. Alexandrine parakeet,Geotagged,Parakeets,Psittacula eupatria,South Africa,Winter, birds, parrots Click/tap to enlarge PromotedCountry intro

1. This is a master piece in composition, Claire. Gorgeous! Posted 10 years ago
1. Thanks Ferdy, fortunately this one just loved to pose! Posted 10 years ago
2. How do you discriminate between the two species, is it by the red patch on the wing? If so, there are a few misidentified ones as Ringneck parakeets. Posted 10 years ago
1. Yes Wildflower, there is the coloration around the wing plus they are quite a bit larger, up to about twice the size of a ringneck, but they can be easily confused. Posted 10 years ago
2. Thanks for the corrections on my earlier photos, Wildflower. Posted 10 years ago
1. There are 2 more photos from the same set I am not sure about, the wings are not visible. Posted 10 years ago
1. Fixed those 2, thanks. Posted 10 years ago

The Alexandrine parakeet is a medium-sized parrot in the genus Psittacula of the family Psittaculidae. It is named after Alexander the Great, who transported numerous birds from Punjab to various European and Mediterranean countries and regions, where they were prized by the royalty, nobility and warlords.
