Mule Deer Buck in Full Velvet
A mature mule deer buck with full velvet on his antlers is feeding constantly to bulk up for the upcoming mating season. This particular buck was with another younger buck in the meadow also feeding. Captured in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming.
The mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) is a deer indigenous to western North America; it is named for its ears, which are large like those of the mule. Two subspecies of mule deer are grouped into the black-tailed deer.
