Gatekeeper butterfly resting on leaf, Netherlands
Males of this species are known for their aggressive mating behavior. When looking for a mate, they fly through low vegetation for days, humping and landing on anything that looks remotely female, including leafs. Females who decline the offer vibrate their wings rapidly.

The Gatekeeper, sometimes called the Hedge Brown, is found in West, South and Central Europe, Morocco, Turkey, Asia Minor and the Caucasus.
