  1. hello wildflower...I know you identified this as queen butterfly but it is definitely not queen. This was on exhibit at Brookside...and it is a monarch butterfly! Posted 5 years ago
    1. I don't get your point here. Comparing the wing pattern it looks like a queen, not a monarch. The difference is in the forewings. The monarch has distinct black veins on both wings and 2 rows of white spots with a black stripe between them. The queen has more plain colour orange-brown forewings with 1 row of white spots.

      1. Hello Wildflower... I thought it was definitely a monarch because it was a series of pictures I took of Monarch butterflies at the exhibit. Anyway, between Viceroy and Monarch I do have difficulty with id them in the wild especially if they are viewed from different angles. Thanks!!! Posted 5 years ago, modified 5 years ago

The Queen Butterfly is a North and South American butterfly in the family Nymphalidae with a wingspan of 70–88 mm . It is orange or brown with black wing borders and small white forewing spots on its dorsal wing surface, and reddish ventral wing surface fairly similar to the dorsal surface. The ventral hindwings have black veins and small white spots in a black border. The male has a black androconial scent patch on its dorsal hindwings. It is found throughout the tropics and into the temperate.. more
