Glaucous winged gull For the birders - a view to better identify this gull as opposed to it's close relative the western gull. The main differences are the wing tip color - all shades of grey rather than some black and eye ring color, which is pink rather than yellow. The two are close enough to be able to interbreed, so there are hybrids out there. This guy looks to be fully glaucous winged in his appearance. 1. Hi morpheme,
Thanks for identifying the ring-billed gull. I should have guessed that it might be from somewhere other than Europe...They are migratory and most move south to the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of North America, also the Great Lakes, but apparently this gull is a regular wanderer to western Europe, Ireland and Great Britain

The glaucous-winged gull is a large, white-headed gull. The genus name is from Latin "Larus" which appears to have referred to a gull or other large seabird. The specific "glaucescens" is New Latin for "glaucous" from the Ancient Greek, "glaukos", denoting the grey color of its wings.
