Snoozing, Smiling Galapagos Sea Lion

  1. There are two similar species - Galapagos Fur Seals and Sea Lions so it is hard to tell which one this is. There are Wikipedia pages for both of them. If common names are not recognized try to use the scientific name.

    1. On my Page I've posted both species. You can see some differences in the two including this picture. It's doubtful this is a fur seal as they hide in rocky crevices away from humans as they were almost hunted to extinction before the Galapagos was preserved. So generally the Galapagos sea lions are the ones out on the beaches. Posted 11 years ago

The Galápagos sea lion is a species of sea lion that exclusively breeds on the Galápagos Islands and – in smaller numbers – on Isla de la Plata . Being fairly social, and one of the most numerous species in the Galápagos archipelago, they are often spotted sun-bathing on sandy shores or rock groups or gliding gracefully through the surf. Their loud bark, playful nature, and graceful agility in water make them the "welcoming party" of the islands.
