  1. A surprising species intro, well done Lily! Posted 11 years ago
    1. I noticed that actually the Eastern goldfinch and the American goldfinch are one and the same bird. I searched for Eastern Goldfinch and it pulled up the American but as you will see in the description they are the same. (You already have the American goldfinch as a separate identification but same description. You could merge these). Posted 11 years ago
      1. Thanks. The confusing part though is that both actually do have different binomial species names: Spinus tristis and Carduelis tristis. Posted 11 years ago
        1. They are synonyms. It seems that Spinus tristis is the latest one, although Carduelis tristis is still in use in some sources.

            That is interesting...thanks

          2. Thank you. Not sure what to do here. There's 7 photos linked to the old one so it seems more popular or more used. If I'd merge the 7 photos to the new species, I would still not prevent people from using the old term, thus recreating the duplicate species again. Posted 11 years ago
          3. It absolutely does make sense to merge the two, but then each time someone entered the old term it would again appear as new species. You should jus leave it alone at this point and whatever is entered will come up with the same detail "The American goldfinch , also known as the eastern goldfinch......etc" Posted 11 years ago, modified 11 years ago

The American goldfinch, also known as the eastern goldfinch or "lightning bird," is a small North American bird in the finch family. It is migratory, ranging from mid-Alberta to North Carolina during the breeding season, and from just south of the Canadian border to Mexico during the winter.
