  1. Awesome. The orange antennae and legs had me intruiged so I did some searching. I believe this is the Giant Agave Bug. Posted 11 years ago
    1. Thank you! I searched for a long time and finally gave up after I couldn't find it. They definitely were giant bugs. Posted 11 years ago
      1. Perhaps I can share how I search, it may help you in the future. I primarily use Google image search. I start out with "Leaf-footed bugs", but that leaves too many options. Then I narrow it down to "Black Leaf-footed bug". That still leaves many options. Then I play around by adding the location to the search query, just as long until I get a manageable set. Then it was a matter of finding one with the orange legs.

It's a simple process, but often with the combination of location, specie group and key characteristic (such as color) you can get quite far.

The Giant Agave Bug is a leaf-footed bug in the Acanthocephala genus. Apical segment of antennae bright orange, remaining segments dark; metatibial flange parallel-sided and extending the length of tibia; humeral angles relatively small (greatly expanded in A. declivis); this combination of 3 characters is diagnostic. Males have greatly swollen hind femora bearing at least one large spike; females have slender hind femora bearing several small spikes.
