  3. I'm pretty sure this is either an Eastern Garter Snake (Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis) or Maritime Garter (Thamnophis sirtalis dorsalis). There are very few other snake species in Vermont that resemble this. The trouble with identifying garter snake subspecies is that their range maps aren't even fully described and many look similar. The Common Garter Snake is a snake indigenous to North America. Most garter snakes have a pattern of yellow stripes on a brown or green background and their average length is about 50 cm, maximum about 125 cm.
