Southern Swamp Deer
I came across this subspecies of swamp deer in Khana National Park in Madhya Pradesh, India. Getting the shot was a little tricky because it was in a low lying marsh surrounded by tall grass. Consequently, every time I tried to take a shot, the grass in the foreground would obscure its face. For this shot it moved its head just enough to the right.
The barasingha , also called swamp deer, is a deer species distributed in the Indian subcontinent. Populations in northern and central India are fragmented, and two isolated populations occur in southwestern Nepal. It is extinct in Pakistan and in Bangladesh.
