      1. No worries. For some species, particularly insects, them looking the same does not mean they are the same species. Yes, it can be quite hard to be precise in such situations. In this case I found the ID unlikely because the identified hover fly only naturally occurs in Australia, and I believe you're from the US? Posted 11 years ago

"Episyrphus balteatus", sometimes called the marmalade hoverfly, is a relatively small hoverfly of the Syrphidae family, widespread throughout the Palaearctic region, which covers Europe, North Asia, and North Africa.
