The Water Rail - Rallus aquaticus
The Rietputten is a small nature reserve where many birds hibernate. On a snowy winterday I visited this place hoping to photograph Bearded Reedlings. Unfortunately they hide to deep in the reeds, but this water rail wasn't too shy and wanted to pose willingly.

The Water Rail is a bird of the rail family which breeds in well-vegetated wetlands across Europe, Asia and North Africa. Northern and eastern populations are migratory, but this species is a permanent resident in the warmer parts of its breeding range.

Funny also about those bearded reedlings. They're on the top of my list. I think it's the most beautiful bird in our country. Posted 11 years ago
