  1. I am sorry but I am very confused on identifying species. I thought that I had done that in the title of this picture. I found out what this fly was and named it (Golden-backed Snipe Fly) with the species name Chrysopilus thoracicus next. I can't figure out how to get the species identification to come up next to the picture. I have tried to read everything I could about how to ID species but I don't know how to enter the info next to the picture. Could someone please tell me what I am doing wrong? I would really appreciate any help. Posted 11 years ago
    1. Deb, no worries, I'll explain it. The photo title can be set to anything. It is recommended to include the species name and location in it. However, to truly identify the species on the photo, you basically link this photo to a species record. The species record link is what you see in the info panel. On photos that are not identified yet, you will find the "identify species" button. On this photo you will not see it anymore, since somebody else already identified it for you.

Regarding the "identify species" button, here are some instructions:

      http://www.jungledragon.com/about/identifyspecies

Give it a try on your existing photos that are not identified yet. Pay close attention to the instructions though.

      1. Thanks for the help.....I have read these instructions over and over again. I have been trying to follow them to the letter and up until now, I have not been able to succeed with a species identification. I was just able to put a species ID with one of my photos! I'm not quite sure what I did different this time but it worked. Maybe I am just getting frustrated too easily. I will continue trying to do this will all of my photos. Thanks again! 1. When you say that you do not succeed, how are you experiencing that? Do you see an error message? Does the process just not finish?

If you enter a correct species name (important: really a species name, so not a family or genus name), it should work in 90% of cases. In 10% of cases, it will not work, usually because there is no Wikipedia page for it (JungleDragon matches species names with Wikipedia pages). In those cases, there is the "request manual" species option, but that option should be used with care.

          1. I get a "no match found" written in red. I must be entering a family or genus name. I will pay closer attention to that. I have faith in myself and I am not one to give up. Thanks again for your help. Posted 11 years ago
        2. So here's a simple trick to check if you what you enter is indeed a species name. Go to the english wikipedia site and search for the exact same term there. If it is a species, in 90% of cases it will show you a Wikipedia species page. Here's an example:

          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greta_oto

Check out that right block on the wikipedia page. It is a species block. You can tell because it has a "binomial name". That makes it a species. If you are unable to find such a species page at Wikipedia, likely you did not search for a species.

However, it is possible that you did in fact enter a valid species name yet Wikipedia does not have a page for it anyway. In that case you can double check the correctness of your species search term at eol.org. That site basically has all species known. If you can find the species there, yet there is no Wikipedia page, you can request a moderator of JungleDragon to manually create the species in JungleDragon. That option should only be used in that situation. You will find that option on the identification dialog, under the "advanced" setting of the dialog. Again, only use it when you are sure that you have a valid species name and Wikipedia has no page for it.
