Yellow-edged Giant Owl side view
The butterfly park "Vlinders aan de Vliet" in the Netherlands at this time of year had dozens of these giant owls during their flight period. As large as they are, they are still sometimes hard to see. This one was only inches away from my face before I spotted it.

The Yellow-edged Giant Owl (Caligo atreus) is a butterfly of the Nymphalidae family. The species can be found from Mexico to Peru. The wingspan is 140–160 mm. The larvae feed on Musa and Heliconia species and can be a pest for banana cultivation. Adults feed on juices of rotting fruit.
