  1. Sunday on my way back from Srebarna lake - protected nature reserve in North-east Bulgaria near town of Silistra on Danube river - I spotted some birds flying over the road. I stopped the engine to make a better observation and noticed a lot of holes in the sandy slope alongside the road. From one of them this funny chick peeped out and loudly announced how hungry it is. 1. They are such gorgeous birds. This looks like a pretty large chick, almost like an adult. Posted 11 years ago
      1. There were more than 20 holes in the slope. Obviously in some of them there were chicks, because the parents permanently flew back and forth, but only this one was brave enough to show up. I think they all were hatched in course of several days. One day difference is a big difference. Posted 11 years ago

The European bee-eater is a near passerine bird in the bee-eater family Meropidae. The genus name "Merops" is Ancient Greek for "bee-eater", and "apiaster" is Latin, also meaning "bee-eater", from "apis", "bee".
