The sign before this giant millepede mentions "Julus spec", yet I cannot find anything meaningful online using that term. I'll ask the zoo for an exact identification.

  1. Ferdy,
Julus is the genus and the word spec is probably an error being the shortening of the word species. This one looks like a Julus terrestris. http://www.snipview.com/q/Julus_terrestris

    1. Thanks Lily, I think you're right on that "spec" word. I'm still not entirely sure on your species suggestion though, meaning, if I check Google images for photos of it, I get back a lot of entries not looking alike. Posted 10 years ago
      1. I thought as much...especially since that website did not seem to be particularly "in the know". That is why I did not identify the millipede myself. Posted 10 years ago
        1. Take a look at this one on Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anadenobolus_monilicornis Posted 10 years ago
          1. Thank you so much, that looks like a likely match. As this one was taken in a zoo, a good reminder I should photograph any and all signs :) Posted 10 years ago
      2. Try Anadenobolus monilicornis Posted 10 years ago
  2. An interesting bit of trivia is that the earliest known terrestrial animal is the millipede, Pneumodesmus newmani, who lived some 428 million years ago. Millipedes have been around for a while :) Posted 10 years ago
    1. That is interesting indeed, did not know that. They seem to have this primitive yet lasting design. Kind of like the horseshoe crab:
